START LEARNING KUNG FU
What is Mantis Kung Fu?
The term Kung Fu refers to the martial arts of China. Kung Fu originated in a place called the Shaolin Temple, where monks practiced Kung Fu for health and self-defense during their quest for enlightenment.
The first Shaolin temple was a Buddhist monastery built in 377 A.D. in the Henan province of China. In 527 A.D. a Buddhist prince, Bodhidharma, or Da Mo in Chinese, traveled to the temple for religious teaching, but found the monks weak and in poor health. To find a way to give the monks strength and vitality, Da Mo locked himself in a room for nine years of meditation. His resulting work, Yi Jin Jing, a series of exercises which developed strength, vitality, and internal energy, is considered the original Shaolin martial art.

Historically, Kung Fu in China was an integral part in the education of scholars and the leaders of government. The Chinese people placed great value in the practice of Kung Fu because they felt it taught respect, patience, humility, and morality.
Many Americans believe that Kung Fu is a term which describes a single martial art, much like Taekwondo, Judo, or Aikido. In reality, Kung Fu is a general term which includes hundreds of styles of Chinese martial arts. Some examples of Kung Fu styles are Long Fist, Eagle Claw, and Taiji Quan

The PRAYING MANTIS System taught here on the GOLD COAST is a very comprehensive system that improves not just the health of the practitioner but also their circulation, flexibility, coordination, and clarity of mind. TONGLONG is one of the original SHAOLIN styles of KUNG FU.
This system of training is used to clear away blockages and weaknesses in the body by moving through a sequence of techniques that, while can be defined in martial application, are equally beneficial for the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and inevitably the organs of the body. Through these movements, we open the pathways of the body and correct posture in a sustainable method.

LEARN QI GONG

Sitting Qi gong with Master Mai Tenglong - Foshan China
Qi gong’ is a practice that incorporates breathing techniques and specific movements and postures to help adjust balance in a practitioner’s body and mind, heighten feeling, internal awareness, and bodily communication, and to promote an overall more balanced and healthy existence. As a result of aligning the consciousness and the body in more harmonious communication with each other, we find the body healthier, with a stronger immunity to protect against invasive forces like sickness and disease. Qigong is a specific practice for attaining longevity and making the body and mind overall stronger, more robust, and efficient. Having more internal awareness and stronger bodily communication can also help practitioners to find their individual strengths and weaknesses, develop life goals, and learn to train their bodies and minds together.
Black Mantis qigong has two variations of qigong practice: hard qigong and internal, or soft, qigong.
The practices of qigong involve specific breathing technique, as well as the practice of swallowing air in order to cleanse the internal organs and digestive tract, gathering, distributing, and circulating qi throughout the body, storing qi, compacting qi, using qi for explosive power and protection, and strengthening the internal organs. Hard qigong practice trains the tendons, bones and skin, while internal qigong practice focuses on the cultivation of ‘essence’, qi, and ‘spirit’.
Combining these practices together with the conditioning of the skin, muscles, and tendons through repeated hitting with various technique and instruments and various movements can increase the strength of the external body and internal organs. Once a practitioner of hard qi gong has trained the higher levels of training they can then break objects over their body and be struck with kicks, punches, etc. without sustaining injury.
Internal qigong practice can also be called ‘soft’ qigong. Daoist practice maintains that the cultivation of the mind and spirit must be coordinated with the improvement of the body. Both are considered internal/soft qigong. In internal qigong the focus is placed on deep breathing without allowing the thoughts to wander too far. The practice of soft qigong does not require the use of large amounts of physical energy. This type of training can help to open the lungs and strengthen respiration, strengthen the organs, and also open the energy channels and meridians of the body. We practice both hard qigong and soft qigong to connect the body as a composite whole.
The benefits of internal qigong practice are vast. Internal qigong practice is beneficial for all people and can help with physical and emotional ailments that a practitioner may be suffering from. The main practice of internal qi gong is the practice of taking in healthy fresh qi and expelling the waste, toxins, and unhealthy qi that have accumulated in our bodies over time. Alongside this practice is the practice of collecting qi and storing it in the dantian to strengthen the body and revitalize the energy and the spirit.
The practice of qigong is a method that people of all body types, ages, and goals can partake in. By awakening the potential of our bodies, strengthening our immunity and inner-communication, and understanding each pathways of circulation, we work towards having a clean and calm body, mind, and spirit.

Ego and competitiveness – as an American, this is what I expected walking into the Mantis Kung Fu Academy for the first time. What I found and have learned is that the true Spirit of Kung Fu resides here. A family that loves each other, and helps each other to grow. The instructors are top notch, and will push you, but not beyond your limits. Your brothers and sisters will always be there to support you in your journey of this great art.
A tree should be judged by its fruit, and the instructors here are among the best martial artists I’ve ever found.
I now know that true skill and ability melt away the ego, and all that is left is love and good will. This is why I joined the Academy, and recommend it to everyone. Salute!

Introduction to basic strikes. One strike is all it take to hurt some street thug. A fight against a skilled fighter requires a different set of fighting skills. Don’t judge this video by the simple ways it shows how some techniques are used against a demonstration partner.
The strikes, grabs, and breaks are similar to jujitsu techniques. It takes a long time to learn kung fu, because a long time ago people lived on farms and small towns. To learn kung fu was like being a magician. Until today, many Chinese people only saw kung fu in movies.
A modern way of teaching kung fu should be the next step to making life easier for students. Nobody is perfect.
